How are we to make sense of the transformation in gay representation-- from virtual invisibility before 1970 to the "gay chic" of today? Off the Straight & Narrow is the first in-depth documentary to cast a critical eye over the growth of gay images on TV. Leading media scholars provide the historical and cultural context for exploring the social implications of these new representations.

Off the Straight & Narrow challenges viewers to consider the value and limits of available gay images: who is represented, what they get to say, and how people respond to them. The video is an invaluable tool for all educators interested in introducing students to issues of representation and diversity in the media.

  • I think the only representation of bisexuality I've seen on tv or in the movies is something along the lines of Girls Gone Wild material...immature sexuality all together and used to gain male viewers not for women to delve into their sexualities or support those who do (unless it's drunk in front of a camera).

  • Being bi or Gay is NOT a damn Mental illness and its not really a choice i believe i was Born Bi i just realised that i liked women when i was 11 and you know what i dont care what people say im me and NO ONE is going to change me!

  • Is that William Buckley hiding behind the pot plant?

  • That openly line is SO dated!

  • @slagathor02 exactly its not an illness!!! lol

  • @destiniburnsed1993 this video wasnt against gays it was for them its just sort of like a documentary on peoples shifting between ignorance and understanding.

  • I don't get why someone's sexual orientation is a "lifestyle". The only thing that changes in your life is who you're with, maybe what clubs you go to. I've never heard anyone call heterosexuality a lifestyle.

  • Now that was just dumb of you to say such a thing. Your kids are gay themselves!

  • By being celibate and proud, I go against very gross, disgusting, and sexist gender roles and stereotypes about men and women.

One of the things I respect about your religion, is that Christianity values men's virginity and chastity as well. Your very God, Jesus Christ, stayed virgin until death. And Catholic priest vow celibacy. I look up to that fact about your religion. It's sad so many of y'all can't respect us back.

  • And if by sexuality activity, frequent sex is a stereotype of non-heterosexuals. It's not necessarily true. I'm a Bisexual and we get the WORST stereotype of promiscuity. I am a virgin man and proudly so. Not because of religious values, but because I am a man. I take pride in my celibacy because as a male, society finds my lack of sexual activity laughable and mockful. And thinks I should strive for promiscuity as a guy. While attacking women and calling them "sluts" for the same.

  • SaintJohn86, what is this "gay lifestyle" you speak of? Are you talking about the stereotypical feminine camp gay? There's nothing wrong with going against gender roles women violated gender roles when they started wearing pants and working. Gender roles aren't necessary. And nor are all gay men effeminate and nor are all lesbian women butch. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
