This summers multi-cultural series draws to a close Sunday, September 14, 2008, when from noon to 8:00 pm The Great Plaza at Penns Landing in Philadelphia is transformed into a monumental fiesta for the Mexican Independence Day Festival. This aint your run-of-the-mill cultural street party. This date is significant for all Mexicans because it represents the birth of a free country, proud of its ancestry and identity.

Mexican or not, youre invited to experience Mexican culture with food, music, dancing, and crafts. If you know anything at all, and Im pretty sure you do, youre not going to want to miss out on this fiesta, which has become a traditional reunion of all Latino communities: Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Columbians, Venezuelans, Cubans, and the list goes on, all together celebrating the richness of their heritage. Its a spicy mix of Latin mariachi bands, Mexican regional dances, arts and crafts, exciting prizes, with a hearty serving of the authentic flavor of Mexican cuisine.

For Latinos, the word fiesta is not just a reason to throw a party. It also means family, which is so very important to their culture: and not just mom and dad. Family means everyone - parents, children, grandparents, cousins, uncles, and even friends. Thousands of people from across the Delaware Valley have already witnessed the spectacular success of this event in previous years.

The stage will be grooving throughout the festival with dancers, musicians, bands, speakers, and other performers. Grupo Cana Real from Mexico City is a 16-piece band featuring rhythms and music from various Latino cultures. Mariachi Flores, a five brother group, will perform mariachi favorites. Jose Luis De La Cruz, classical Mexican guitarist and balladeer, will perform as well.

All that entertainment sure would go down good with some delicious Mexican food, wouldnt it? Participating food vendors this year are Los Tacos, Tacos Citlali, La Veracruzana, Mix Masters Café, Adobe Café, Joses Restaurant, Que Chula Puebla, Las Chivas , Sol Azteca, Cibucan, Rio Bravo, and Corona. Eat, drink, be merry.

Head on over for more information on the Mexican Independence Day Festival site at Penns Landing. The Great Plaza is located at Columbus Boulevard at Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
