The 1990 World Cup Final was contested between West Germany and Argentina. It was an ill-tempered game, notable for the first two sendings off in a World Cup final. West Germany won 10, with a late Andreas Brehme penalty sealing their third World Cup win. Argentina also became the first team not to score in a World Cup Final.

Erstmals in der Geschichte der Weltmeisterschaften kam es zu einer Finalrevanche, denn schon vier Jahre zuvor standen sich beide Mannschaften im Finale gegenüber. Wie im Viertel- und Halbfinale verließen sich die Argentinier auf ihren Elfmeterkiller Sergio Goycochea. Die ersatzgeschwächte Mannschaft hatte im ganzen Spiel keine einzige Torchance. Insbesondere Maradona konnte nicht an die Leistungen bei der WM in Mexiko anknüpfen, da er von Guido Buchwald in Manndeckung genommen wurde. Aber da die deutsche Mannschaft ihre Torchancen lange Zeit nicht nutzen konnte, musste ausgerechnet ein Elfmeter die Entscheidung bringen. Dieser wurde aber nicht nach einem klaren Foul an Klaus Augenthaler gepfiffen, sondern nach einer umstrittenen Attacke gegen Rudi Völler, was viele Beobachter als Konzessionsentscheidung auffassten. Hatte im Viertelfinale noch Lothar Matthäus den entscheidenden Strafstoß verwandelt, so war es diesmal Andreas Brehme, der die Verantwortung übernahm. Matthäus musste in der Halbzeit seine Schuhe wechseln und fühlte sich in ganz neuen Schuhen nicht sicher. Es war das erste WM-Finale, das durch einen Elfmeter entschieden wurde. Unrühmliches Ende des Spiels war die zweite Rote Karte der Partie, die der argentinische Spieler Gustavo Dezotti nach einer Tätlichkeit an Jürgen Kohler erhielt. Mit dem dritten Titel konnte Deutschland in der Zahl der Titel mit Brasilien und Italien gleichziehen.

@mojeda117 who cares who argentina played b4 reaching the final.the fact is that germany beat argentina and won the world cup proving they were the best.if argentina beat brazil and italy and germany beat argentina it simply means that germany was better than all of them hence why they won.stop being a little bitch about everything and accept the loss.

@fredfan217 Better side? Yes, they played fantastic their whole tournament, but so did Brazil and Italy. Who beat them? Argentina. I believe if Maradona would have won, it would be a much closer comparison between Maradona and Pele.

its was the last greatest final game in the previous century , even the next finals comes up was not like this fine , its special , i remember this match well , i was 9 years old in the summer night in amman jordan , we were stay around the T.V all of family were fans of Germany .. it was great night!

Worst final in the world cup's history. Argentina had such a tough time getting the final, defeating great teams such as Brazil, and Italy. Maradona's match against italy must have been heart breaking. Playing in his die hard fans club home against the country that loved him in his club level. This final was nothing but bought. That penalty was garbage, Argentina had a defensive position and were waiting it out to be held in penalties due to their recent luck games earlier.
