  • heavy duty meal, did you ever think about baking it,like my Scot Granny did,to get the top browned?..

  • To be honest, baking isn't something I've really explored at camp. It's bringing the extra gear required that puts me off but I'd like to look into working with rocks and create a bit of an over. Something to try in the future.

  • I love your cooking vids but what is the dishes you used the spork is i believe a rei lexan spork but what bowl did you use???

  • In this video I'm using the Nalgene 500ml wide mouth container as my bowl. Last season though (2009) I picked up the X-Bowl and X-Cut by SeaToSummit. I've been quite smitten with them since both the cup and bowl can fit in both my 1L and 2L pots. So they work great and they're a real space saver.

  • looks ok, but without being too picky,

That is not a shepherds pie!

SHEPHERDS PIE DOES NOT CONTAIN SWEETCORN!

sorry had to point that out as shepherds pie is my all time favourite meal, especially with the fork lines across the top so it looks like a ploughed field, and the sprinkling of cheese on the top to make the little lines all golden brown and crispy!

Gotta go im gonna have to make shepherds pie!

  • You certainly know more about authentic shepards pie than I do. This is how I've always known it, blame my mother ;) Yours does sound delicious.

  • That looks fantastic. The berfect meal for the outdoors. Now I'm hungry.

  • these mixes often varied depending on what war around so now we have lotsas sweet corn so go for it. I have never been into purism with these things; It all often boils dpwn to what parents, relatives and older friends taught us, I likwe that u show now to do things without having a full kitchen at home.

  • Shepherd shmepherd. Yes! You are right! It is not the recipe for real shepherd's pie. But dang it looks good! Despite the inaccurate ingredients, the tips in the video are very welcome.

    Thank you for posting.

  • Great idea. I love to throw some onion in mine too, maybe onion flakes re hydrated? Making me hungry...

  • Hi Troy

Going on a 10 day trip in two weeks so I tried your shepards pie today for lunch. This is really good ...thanks for the recipe . I will be bagging some of this up for the trip.

  • Sorry dude, shepherd's pie is made with lamb too, not beef. A beef pie is called a cottage pie. But what you've got here is a mix of ground beef and corn covered in mashed potatoes and gravy. Gravy would also essentially be the juices in the meat, and the whole point of the potatoes on top is to fire it and make somewhat of a crust on top.

  • what part of canada are you in?

  • Were did you buy your pot set?

  • This looks awesome and it's making me hungry! I will definitely try this on my next outing. Thanks!!!

  • @bobbstard My shepherd's pie always had corn, but maybe it's a Canadian thing. The "real" original, French recipe "Hachis Parmentier" has no corn though.
