Ishmael was Abram's child, just like Isaac, the father of the Jews. He was sent away by Abram as, according to the bible, Ishmael was not the "son of promise", born out of Abram's faith. Ishmael and his mother got lost in the desert, where God saved them by showing a water hole (Gen. 21:11-21). Ishmael chose a lifestyle of his own, independent of his family and its values, see Gen. 16:12 in the bible, where it is prophesied that "he will be a wild man, and his hand will be against every man, and everyman's hand against him". Ismael was the father of 12 princes and many tribes, e.g. Kedar and his descendants (Gen. 25:13), people dwelling in tents. One wonders how strong Ishmael's lifestyle is still an influence in today's Arab culture. His choices definitely bear consequences to this very day.
