An high-quality and longer version of this work is available here: http://diegostocco.bandcamp.com/album/music-from-sand

Description: I had some sandbags in the backyard that I used in November during a rainy day. I was moving them to a different spot when I heard the noise of the sand. I thought that maybe I could try a new sound design technique so I bought some piezo film transducers and started to experiment with them.

The entire track is created only out of tuned sand tones. No additional sounds or waveforms.
I emphasized the inner notes of the sand grains and mapped them on a sampler as a series of instruments. The grooves are all played live with various techniques, including taping two piezo films to my fingers.

I'd like to dedicate this work to Mike Oldfield. When I was a child I listened to his music and it opened my mind. That experience triggered my life passion to create the means to access sounds we've never heard before.

  • your music is soo peacefull..wow. i want to beach it up now :) do you make cd's???

  • @skinnylilwitch6 Thanks, this track is available for free download on my Bandcamp page, I can't post links in comments but if you google Diego Stocco Bandcamp you'll find it.

  • How are you getting those plucky melodic tones?

  • @Argitoth What you see me playing on the keyboard are tonal frequencies I extracted from the sand, mapped in a sampler as a multi-velocity program.

    No additional sounds added.

Once inside the sampler I was able to extend the playable range and play chords and melodic parts.

  • This actually doesn't seem to be difficult to do. Pretty nice, but I like Bassoforte better :D

But kudos for being original, which you don't see often. Cheers from the Netherlands!

  • @JanLeonard91 I agree with you, what I'm playing is not that difficult, but that wasn't the idea. The core idea here is to use sand as the main element and create the most out of it in a musical way. Glad you liked Bassoforte : )
