Wayne plays a lot of melodic minor. any tips on playing outside? mel. minor over what chords? thnks

@beeeastmaster The basic use of the m minor is over a Lydian dom chord on the 5th degree or over a 7th sharp 9 over the 2nd degree, but don't stop there,! rather, get familiar with the m minor, mix it with other ideas. Create limitation in your fingering options, and creativity will find a way to come up with cool phrases! (this is IOS, basically) stay away from other players licks, and, don't be obsessed with playing the right notes, just let them flow, even the wrong notes sound beautiful!

@rodjoe2001 what changes are you playing over in the vid? so mel. min. for dom7 #9 if a cdom7#9 would be D melodic min.?

@beeeastmaster C # 7 #5#9, the second (dim) degree of a C# = D (melodic minor scale).

Or, the 7th degree of the D minor scale= C#.

The other chord would be G 13 b5 ( lydian dom, the 5th degree= D melodic minor scale, or, the 4th degree of a D = G

I remember from music theory, the up plus down interval to reach the same note ( an octave apart) must always equal 9. Going up a fifth or down a fourth, 4+5= 9, or up a 6th, down a 3rd, 6+3=9, 7+2=9.

@beeeastmaster Although there is no substitute for great tuition, please don't forget that phrases are just that, phrases. I would recommend listening to players such as Rez Abassi, Adam Rogers or Wayne if you want to understand their style. Transcribe and then analyse the phrases; that's how thy did it!!

@beeeastmaster build chords off the melodic minor as any other scale...it's not always that simple...but go by your ear and that should work well. you can get some sick sounds.

Copying to get into the current is like getting a glider up with a tow plane. Once you're in the current, you can cut the tow rope. It's the best way known.

IOS stands for Improvisers Operating System, it is a book that Wayne Krantz wrote outlining different note patterns and combinations. Not to be confused with many other "technique" style books which help you sound more like someone famous. This one makes you sound like yourself and is an approach of Krantz's.
