You have never heard of smoothing out a polymer clay sculpture with lighter fluid or alcohol? I use isopropyl alcohol to smooth the details like veins and musculature.... The alcohol smoothing has to be in my top 5 essential tool list!! So has my clay shaper, the same as the one your using here, i have other shapers for different jobs also.....Anyway great tutorial Alias... Really nice head!! Its good to see some head sculpting tutorials on here... Nice work... -Ged.

@bejelmejelbelhelmel Polymer clay. You heat set (cure) it in your kitchen oven at 275F/130C for a half hour per quarter inch layer. My projects go in & out of the oven a couple of times, curing layers, adding raw clay to a cured layer. Polymer clay comes in different colors. If you want a design you build one - think "jelly roll cake" and you'll get the idea of how to make a swirl design.

@Karolloved The tool is called a "clayshaper" this is size "zero" cone tip. They go up to size 6 and there are many tips to choose from. The tips are silicon. There are tools like this called "colour shapers" and the tips are of harder rubber, the large sizes are good for moving larger mounds of clay around. One technique that works well is to "roll" the side of the cone tip over the polymer clay to smooth the surface. Good Luck!

I've noticed people using Odorless Lighter Fluid to smooth out their clay sculptures. Is there an alternative? I don't feel comfortable using something that could burn my house down. Maybe I'm paranoid.

@DannoOMG I have not heard of this practice and there are nearly 2,000 members in my Yahoo Group CITY-o-Clay. No one has mentioned this. Using the side of a cone tipped clayshaper, the tool you see in my video, smooths the surface of polymer clay. Buffing the surface with pad of your finger tip will smooth the surface. I see no need to use flamable liquids on polymer clay when it is going into the oven for heat setting. It does not seem like a safe thing to do.
