Victim Of Hartford Hit-And-Run Dies

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The victim in a hit-and-run in Hartford that made national headlines last year has died.

The son of Angel Arce Torres told Eyewitness News that his father was taken off life support around 6:30 p.m. Monday and died several hours later at Hartford Hospital.

Torres was paralyzed after being hit on Park Street on May 30. The story made national news when surveillance video showed passing motorists and pedestrians ignoring Torres as he lied in the street.

Torres' son said his father died surrounded by family members.

For the past year, Torres' organs have been failing and he was unable to breathe on his own. Torres was paralyzed from the neck down and was unable to speak.

For the past few weeks, doctors were giving Torres' family the option of taking him off life support because his condition was not improving.

Torres recently turned 79 years old.

An autopsy will be performed to determine if Torres died as a result of the hit-and-run injuries. If that is the case, the driver who struck Torres will face more serious charges when found.

The driver fled the scene following the crash. They were driving a dark Honda.
