This is Lord Barnaby,a 10-month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who has learned to use bells to alert us that he needs to go out.
He actually rang the bell the first time before the video started.
Training tips: be sure the bells are low enough that the dog can ring them easily.
If he/she is reluctant to touch the bells at first, put a tiny bit of peanut butter on them.
EVERY time you take the puppy out, ring the bells and say "Go potty."
EVERY time the puppy rings the bells, take him/her out immediately on leash for a potty trip. Keep the trip to just potty -- no playing.
The puppy might eventually use the bells when he/she wants to go out to play. To discourage this, take the dog out on leash to your designated potty place, command "go potty" firmly and if he/she doesn't, bring him/her back in after a couple of minutes.
