— The Boxer lyrics

I am just a poor boy
Though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocket full of mumbles such are promises
All lies and jests
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest

When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station running scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know

Lie la lie ...

Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers,
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there

Lie la lie ...

Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone
Going home
Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me
Bleeding me, going home

In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of ev'ry glove that layed him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains

Lie la lie ...

  • Paul is alone. Why is Garfunkel in the title ? Live from Paris, 2000.

  • i think that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and both versions are good but in different ways, lee made the song sound WAY modern and this is a beautiful version of the song too

  • i think that both versions of this song are good and that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and despite my username i too think that lee's version was better

  • i think that both versions of this song are good and that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and despite my username i toot hink that lee's version was better

  • @slimjim797 Lee dewyze sings better than Art Garfunkel? What? Are you tone deaf? Garfunkel's voice is much sweeter and melodious than Dewyze's. And the difference in technique is even greater. Even in the studio version, you can hear dewyze gasping for breath. Garfunkel was a millionaire by the time he was dewyze's age whereas dewyze is going no where as a singer at the national level.

  • reely good but lee dewyze sings better make a video of him

  • No one sings this better than Simon & Garfunkel!!!

  • haha lee on american idol sings this 4444444 times better holy shit
