Challenged in public opinion polls against a campaign of hope, McCain and his campaign turned to what has been a constant of Republican campaigns - relying on fear to propel voters to support their side. Throughout this election McCain has used the fear of terrorist attacks to diminish his rivals. His campaign has publicly acknowledged that a terror attack would benefit McCain's candidacy, and along that argument it has continually sought to link Obama to a Middle East terror group. McCain used the same tactic during the Republican primary, where he sought advantage from the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and used graphic images in an ad designed to raise credibility questions about his opponents. Propagating fear among voters is not new to Republicans, but practiced through previous campaigns, even by McCain himself in 2004.
