"Wilde said If you want to be a grocer or a general or a politcian or a judge, you will invariably become it. That is your punishment. If you never know what you want to be, if you live what some might call the dynamic life but I will call the artisitic life -- if each day you are unsure of who you are and what you know -- you will never become anything and that is your reward."
For those that want to copy and paste. Because everything Fry says is the absolute balls.

Creation is what we all want, one way or another. We build relationships, commitments, friendships, families... We grow, we cultivate and we create. And like life itself, often we have to destroy in order to thrive...but that's another matter altogether. It's not about owning. It's about becoming part of something bigger. And that's a hard life. A burden ultimately more rewarding than a life without responsibility. Murderers, thieves etc. try to cheat life without responsibility, become empty.

Responsibility is hard, but ultimately worth it. Oscar Wilde's humour shines through in this quote, as he speaks of these jobs, lives, as burdens, which they of course naturally are, both a blessing and a curse but the long term benefits outweigh the cost. Making decisions will always trump indecision. If you remain in the state of doubt you will be free of responsibility, but you will always remain small and be nothing, compared to everything else, because you've built nothing.

I suppose you can't know what it feels like. To become you are have to seize being. Depart to arrive. Being a child feels terrible when you look at the adults, yet now i want nothing more than to be a child again.

From which work by Wilde is the quote? Can ANYONE tell me? Or can u only argue about the moral probity Wilde's sexual preferences?.... Honestly, it makes me think of another Wilde's quotes for the overly earnest: "A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal."
