@MmeLEnfer Rhys changed the time frame to the 1840's when Jane Eyre happend before this, I understand she wanted to put the Emancipation into the story but Rochester still cared for Bertha, he needed "to return" to his wife, he still kept her, if he really did not love her, he would have thrown her away, because Janye Eyre was before the slave trade ended it shows there was no intention of marrying a woman from a declining slave owning family, ever so because she would be poor?

@nounever She hasn't ruined Jane Eyre for you. That book can be standalone if you want it to be. It's a fine book, I just prefer the tropical atmosphere of Sargasso and I find it more personally relatable. Of course she had a slant - I'm not picking on Emily Brönte at all, but it's true that she put her own slant on the whole thing from a colonial British perspective first. That was what gave Rhys the idea to write. And personally, I feel Sargasso is far more passionate.

@MmeLEnfer I prefer Jane Eyre, I like the idea of Jnae Eyre as an innocent novel, Jean Rhys hated the English too much in my opinion and should have left the story alone. She is flawed as the writer because she was half Creole, but white Creole so there is no racial connotations here. I think Jane Eyre is a more passionate novel, Rochester is a cunt in this book and I like the idea of exploring Bertha's character but I think Jean Rhys had a slant in this.

When I was abroad I watched Wide Sargasso Sea movie on TV. 1993/2006 version? First time I learnt about this story, written by Jean Rhys. After watching it, I'd borrowed novel from library. Unfortunately it was misplaced (I'd done part-reading by that time) & could not return it as expected before flying back. Necessary course of action will be taken in due time.

Too bad this film incorrectly interpreted Rhys's use of the term "creole".

breathtaking, exquisite photography of the sea at the beginning.
@mbrboc Imho Wide Sargasso Sea is a better book than Jane Eyre - that is to say, more moving. It is incredibly gorgeous and haunting and sad.
