In the spirit of such landmark Asian films as Akira Kurosawa's RAN from Japan and Zhang Yimou's own HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER promises to be Zhang Yimou's most colorful and biggest production to date, fusing high drama and romantic intrigue with the best of contemporary martial arts. The plot concerns the volatile balance of power between the King (Chow Yun Fat) and the Queen (Gong Li) and his three sons, which entails betrayal, deceit and passion, pitting the King against Queen and father against sons. The glorious canvas includes many of the creative team behind HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS: cinematographer Zhao Xiading (Oscar nominated for HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS), production designer Huo Tingxiao, action director Tony Ching Siu-Tung, sound designer Tao Jing and producers Bill Kong and Zhang Wei Ping. The music is composed by Shigeru Umebayashi (HERO 2046, IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE) and the costume designer is YEE CHUNG MAN (SO CLOSE).

  • I believe movies in other languages should also be heard in that language. You get a truer sense of emotion & appreciate how foreign actors express a scene..This movie has so many twists with amazing scenery.Gong Li, super talent & beauty!

  • ....ask any one of chinese.. they will answer you the movie just ordinary.....they think the movie just normal.....cuz 5000 years for a nation .you will know how complex they could be... some part of this movie even is ture story show in the history...

the forbidden city is just a sleeping place for the emperor ..no more significance to him...no matter how epic it is!!.....

  • You have to really let yourself to get into this movie to fully appreciate it. I was so lucky to stumble upon it and it is one the most amazing foriegn films I've seen for a long time.

  • possibly the most beautiful movie ever made. The story and action when it comes are fantastic too, totally got lost in it. Needs more respect

  • Hah! 240 We meet again

  • @Manas10101 And a history lesson too, don't forget.

Albeit it's really just one turning point of a whole larger epic known as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. You can find a full televised series of it if you search enough, but it's pretty damn long and not quite as stylishly pleasing as the movie.

  • first movie i saw on HD television....amazing to look at

  • ryu vs scorpian music?

  • What a visually beautiful movie. I watched it the other night when it was aired on TV3 here in New Zealand. it is probably better than the movie The Last Emporer when it comes to the beautiful costumes and buildings. The storyline was kinda twisting and turning, but seriously a great visual feast with a story that madeit all quite believable. Ten out of ten for the acting and the cast

  • @JJaaPPaaSSee

If you're looking for an epic Chinese film, "Red Cliff" would be the way to go.
