Also I just want to add you two have some ridiculous expectations about how parents should treat their children. Not every parent has constant time for their children and being wrapped up in your work doesn't make you a "bad parent". Every family is unique and you saying you expected her parents to be authoritative is stupid as the sole reason she was interested in the Other World was because her parents there payed her attention. Her parents were still good people.

@synthtron2000 I agree. I'm 16 years old (also happen to be an atheist) and these people just completely missed the point of the movie. THERE WAS A LESSON! It was in the friggin tagline for Pete's sake- be careful what you wish for. If something seems too good to be true it is. And if they wanted to come at it from a Christian perspective they could have even likened her trade for the button eyes to selling your soul to the devil to live in paradise. But no. All we got was "creepy and boring".

Doesn't have to be a movie for 10 year olds just because it's animated...

I'm glad you guys chose to give it at least an "alright" review. I do think it had a "biblical model" though. Exodus 20:2-17 Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you. Coraline learned in the end to appreciate the family that was given to her, despite their flaws, after which she was able to continue living in God's given land (as opposed to being a slave for eternity in the other Mother's world, i.e. hell).

You also mention that the mysticism of the "other home" was lacking. The other home is a parallel world, seen by only those that consciously interact with it. That's why Coraline's parents had no idea about their kidnapping. That's also why Wybie's grandma knew what was happening to Coraline.

Also, the whole identity of the two woman that lived downstairs was that they were washed up vaudeville showgirls. Part of being a show girl is being half naked, but there was no pornography in the movie at all. And under different circumstances I might agree that little amount of clothes is inappropriate for children, but that segment of the movie was one of the best pieces of comedy in the film and I was in stitches the whole time (my 11 year old sister was also laughing).

And for the more trivial things; Coraline was not a rip off of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The only thing these two stories share in common are the wacky characters and the idea of an alternate universe.

Coraline's adventure didn't just "make her friends with the neighbor-kid," it changed her as a person. That's the whole message of the story. She wished for something better and was taught that what she has is already fantastic.

You guys keep going on about how there was no plot, and there was no message or moral. It follows the outline that the woman in this movie stated (running away, realizing she was wrong).
These people are retarded, they just don't get it. They are so immature.
