  • Actually, who cares if it does or doesn't sound like / compares to the SID?...

These YM compositions have a very distinct feel, style, whatever, just like SIDs... and I do prefer that just for itself... If I'm after SIDs, I listen to tunes from HVSC... ;-)

I should also point out that I'm absolutely crazy about Scavenger's tunes... :-D

  • Hi Ahle2. I must say I'm amazed why on all occasions you're repeating the same sequence: "extremely limited sound chip...". Who cares in fact? I think most of us appreciate your great work on Atari ST vs Commodore Amiga comparisons, but is there a point to keep repeating that YM2149 was so limited. I think that in may ways it was good enough, Scavenger is one of the best examples. And of course I have also my beloved STE, even a couple of them, additional ST and Falcon. Addiction it must be :-)

  • Bloody impressive

Is this much of a cpu drain or was it all possible in games too ?

  • This is so cool ^^ i actually know scavenger in real life , his name is Joey :) I used to be one of the Synergy coders in the day :) grtz Zanac

  • great melody, J. d. M ;)

  • Oh yes! "It almost sounds as good as an SID would" - this is how it should be commented :-) Greetz!

  • I'm sorry ;(

But it's just to emphasize how incredible this piece of music actually is. It breakes EVERY boundary that can be broken. It almost sounds as good as an SID whould.

I have never said that i don't like the sound of the YM2149... Actually i am a chip music nerd in every sence of the word.

But still.... it is a very limited sound chip compared to the SID or the PSG part of the 2A07/RP2A07 in the NES.

Limitation is made to be broken . : )

  • I have an Atari STe.... I must say that it´s quite impressive what good coders could squeeze out of an extremely limited sound chip (limited even in it´s day).

PWM should not be possible at all on the YM2149 ( even with tricks).... well, it´s obviously not true.
