  • Hi, I am doing a paper on the subject of the use of Algae, my question would be: Is this viable using any type of algae, or only Chlamydomonas reinhardtii... is Didymosphenia geminata also a possibility?

  • Something as vital as energy should not have too much convolution and too many gate keepers or profiteers. There is always the wood stove, but CH4 is so much better if there is a good method of getting it to work. What if you could capture sunpower and have your own energy plant in your back yard. You would capture save and use the energy in the most storable way. That would alter the face of human life on the planet.

  • The most critical aspect of making methane is that is would be diffiult to make it into a proprietary technology, since it has been around since before the solar system and life. Call it "super Jesus gas" if you will. Just because it is tasteless oderless and colorless and burns perfectly in internal combustion engines, does not mean it is not there or not real. Anyone could do it with some equipment. This means that with some equipment it could alllow anyone to grow their local culture.

  • I am not sure that biodiesel is simpler, unless extraction is the single intermedediate operation. There are already working methane/electric plants from animal waste. It likely has to do with the right microbe to use during production. The two storage possibilities are raw material under a tarp or as final product in a depleted gas well. The cold of winter could be used as a purification tool, before it goes to underground storage. Methane would become the most applicable and cleanest fuel.

  • Biodiesel would be just fine, and could be exported easier than methane. There is more than one option. Methane CH4 (the first gas compound) is the best bet for clean energy. With the existing infrastructure residential energy could be both electric and heat from the gas pipe line. Plus you have a method to capture and use the waste water and CO2 for local usage. It could be grown whereever there is sun and some water. It would also help to extract toxins from the water resources.

  • Hypnofan35 would it not be a better idea to make biodiesel from the algae oil?

Compared to methane, biodiesel is much simpler, safer, easier to transport and store, and cars can run on it with no modification.

  • the "Technocracy" political movement suggests using energy as currency. It is similar to your idea. Google "energy accounting" if interested.

  • One of the good things about methane is the intermediate material (dried algae) can be put into dry storage in pellet form and stored on the ground or in a silo. N2 could be used to keep it from starting. You have an unexpanded intermediat that can be stored easily ready for the digesting (methane production) phase.

  • I know we don't thing about this every day, but since, probably just about anyone who can produce their own fuel has a license to print money. We should probably base the dollar on biofuel, so that way we will have plenty of fuel and plenty of money. It is hard to steal, and gold can alway be hoarded. You could hoard bio methane gas too with a depleted gas well. It is not like you might have to go looking for a place where it will be of value. You could have a biomass op in your backyard.

  • It looks like an excellent project, but it also looks like a ruse. If you do not use it for producing bio methane first, you are wasting everybody's time with this posturing progress. After H2, CH4 is the second gas and probably nearly as old as carbon and Hydrogen; like way older than the solar system and the simplest biogas that can be stored underground in depleted wells.
