Unfortunately there is very little music in the notes which Brook Smith gets out competently enough, so the piece becomes trivialized. This Fantasy is not an easy piece to play, but it is still more difficult to play it so that something vital is conveyed. Michèle Auclair and Geneviève Joy (Henri Dutilleux's late wife), though many people may not have heard of them, give the piece a cogency, a vitality, and an unity of conception that none of the more famous violinists posted here manage.
Enchanting.
