The Pavel Foundation in Barão de Grajaú in the state of Maranhão, Brazil
The Pavel Foundation is an established Brazilian NGO working to provide social aid to some of the poorest areas of Northern Brazil. Since 1992, the Pavel Foundation has been working in Barão de Grajaú in the state of Maranhão. What began as a simple project to provide a small sewing room and basic food for the impoverished in this rural town of 15,000 has blossomed into a successful long-term project to help the area. The Pavel Foundation has launched various development programs, including a literacy campaign, an art therapy program, a well-digging education program, a mothers home for women who have given birth and cannot afford to stay at the hospital, a health center, vocational training, a youth hostel for rural children who want to attend night school, and micro-enterprise training for locals (currently bee keeping and goat raising). The Pavel Foundation is completely funded by private donations, and all funding goes to the project. Furthermore, most of the projects workers are unpaid volunteers.
