Travelling by boat up the Rhine is an experience timelessly unchanged for generations and inspirational to the great romantics on the Grand Tour. This footage ends at St Goar with the first view of the Lorelei rock - a dangerous siren to sailors navigating the river. In practice, with the river only 1.6m deep and littered with shallower areas, the bend and the spectacular view of the roack would provide a dangerous combination of hazard and distraction on account of the beauty of the aspect which opens as one rounds the corner.
