What are smart grids? The University of Nottingham's Ian Dwyer explains as part of our Sherwood Forest interview series. More at http://www.test-tube.org.uk/sherwood/
With this large variation in supply! How is the fault level controlled and how is fault protection governed with what seems almost random embeded generation at various network voltages!
The whole "Smart Grid" idea is a mystery to me and people like this talk about it in such as vague way, it is difficult to understand what they are doing. We already have an energy management system. It accommodates variable loads and variable resources (e.g. wind, solar). So what is the problem that "Smart Grids" actually solve. What problem do I have today that will not exist when "Smart Grids" are implemented.

It's a pretty exciting time to live through, seeing a new paradigm emerge.
