Hal Simpson (the founder of Simpson's nursery) retired and in the 1960s bought the Barrett House Ranch in Jamul with its 185 acres. He was bored so he used 25 of those acres to establish a simple nursery: self-drive and no phone on the premises. It worked.

Mr. Simpson passed away in 1987 and the house has been vacant ever since.

Hal's granddaughter and her husband recently boarded up the house to try to prevent further vandalism.

An article in today's (11/2/2011) San Diego Union-Tribune states that Simpson's Nursery will be closing permanently later this month.

"Simpson's Garden-Town Nursery, an East County institution and family-run operation that goes back 83 years, is selling its last hibiscus and whirligigs and potted trees and preparing to shut its gate later this month."

  • Was just there today. I pass by the house often while going to the Jamul Post Office. I was there for less than 15 minutes and "2" different Sheriffs officers paid a visit. They were nice after they saw an old lady with a camera. I see why there were there, the nursery is right across the street. Someone must have called. I was trespassing however I wanted to finally see what this place was about. There were remnants of PEDICAB bicyles in the garage and glass.

  • It was a beautifull place in the 90s when i lived there.

  • U should of seen the house in the 90s when i lived there. It was beautifull, it was also used in the tv show renigade on the episode "billy". I would love to beat the people responcable for all the damage to that house
