Free motion machine quilting of Penny's quilt using 3 techniques and metallic threads. Please watch Penny's Quilt story for the planning of the quilting, where I draw it out & talk about why I used the designs I chose.

Thanks for your quick response. I googled away this afternoon and discovered the term “Free Motion” and then went to Janome web site and have now discovered the foot won’t fit on my Janome 18W/MW3018. Mine is a standard machine which cost me only $400. I am able to lower my feed dogs tho’ but probably can’t do “Free Motion” very accurately. What a shame!

    Cheers, Mal from Cessnock AU

PS I will however, continue to enjoy your lovely videos

  • @mal1067ry Hi Mal, actually it's my belief that lowering the feed dogs and lightening up the pressure on the presser foot (if you can) is just as good as having this special foot - if - you are using a fairly flat batting. If your batting is polyester and high loft, you might want a free motion foot. There are generic free motion feet if you really want to try one. Google or Amazon the words "big foot free motion" and be sure you get the right shank measurement to match your sewing machine.

  • Marguerita, how do you manage to go forth and back, you're not using a reversing lever are you. Is there something fancy about your machine? Love your videos, I subscribed to your channel.

BTW Great story - I so enjoyed listening to you

  • @mal1067ry Hi, I am using what is called a "Darning Foot" or a "Free Motion Foot" - they describe the same thing - a foot that has a circle at the base (some are open circles, some are closed) but most importantly, the foot has a spring mechanism which lifts it up and down with each stitch, allowing me to move the quilt in any direction. Also, the feed dogs (teeth) are dropped for this type of quilting. I should have explained that in the video - thank you for asking & watching! Marguerita :)

  • Thank you so much for all your video's, they are informative and I do so love your positive attitude to quilting! :-) We can so get caught up on "rules" do's and don't with our quilts! Cheers Trish - Australia

  • @13Kaiya Thanks Trish!! I am getting ready to do some more art quilts - that's my "fun" project for the summer :)
