Jerome Moross says that his Academy Award nominated musical score from the 1958 film, "The Big Country", was inspired by a walk he had taken through the flatlands of New Mexico. His score sets a perfect mood for one of the best westerns ever filmed, directed by William Wyler and starring among others Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Jean Simmons, and Burl Ives in a Best Supporting Actor winning role. The film and its theme on how to handle conflict became a favorite for President Eisenhower during his 2nd term.

  • No matter how many times I hear the main title theme I still get goosebumps.

  • Guess this hit me when I was in the right mood. Really like it. Pictures matched music. Nice feel to it all.

  • Along with Elmer Bernstein's for "The Magnificent Seven" this is possibly the best score ever composed for a Western.

  • Great score. Progressive classic rock band Yes actually quotes this in their cover of Richie Haven's No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed.

  • an amazing masterpeice. just heard it sampled in a McDonald's ad, had to listen again!
