  • I'm sure the obsession with virginity across all religions is hard-wired into our minds. After all, we want to pass our genes on, but how do we (men) know that the child our wife gave birth to is really ours? We might be raising some other man's child. Well, if she's a virgin when we first have sexual intercourse, we can guarantee that the child is ours. Thus, all religions, created as they were by ancient men, place virginity on a high pedestal.

  • I wonder if all this obssession with virginity, with "purity" is an exercise in self-loathing for men who cherish it? A woman is clean, pure, worthy of wearing white before she is untouched by a man. After that, unless she has sex under a very narrowly defined boundary, she is soiled, unclean, impure....and made so by the touch of a man. Made filthy by the penetration and ejaculation that comes from men.

Who's really dirty then? Wouldn't this indicate that men are the dirty ones?

  • @OhManTFE agreed, explain all the others?

  • Pretty sure Isis wasn't a virgin.

  • Hitchens is someone that you can learn so much from each time -- he doesn't recycle his arguments like many others do.

  • The preoccupation that religions have with virginity demonstrates how manmade they really are. Only a puritanical human being would be so obsessed as to whether a woman's vagina has been penetrated by a man. It is only a petty human being who would consider a woman, who is untouched, and whose child is the product of non-sexual reproduction, to be of the highest virtue. If this unfathomably vast cosmos is the product of a higher mind, surely he would not debase himself by such preoccupations.
