JAMES GERALD TURNER July 15, 1933 - December 29, 2010 Retired VP, George Brown College Former President, Community Living Toronto It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Jim. Cherished husband of Diane, proud father of Bert, John (Sandra), Marilyn (Michael Coulter) and David (Susan) and loving Grandpa Jim for Sarah, Tommy, Josh, Maddi and Jack. Jim is survived by siblings: Sr. Patricia (Ursuline Sisters of Chatham Ontario), Dr. Frank (Dr. Joanne), Sr. Cecile (Our Lady's Missionaries) and Tom (Marilyn). Jim was predeceased by his parents Francis Michael (Frank) and Germaine Turner, his brother Bert and his sister Sr. Mary Turner, Ursuline Sisters of Chatham Ontario. He began his teaching career at Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, then spent two years in Grenada, working with CIDA to establish the Commercial and Domestic Arts Institute. Following that, Jim held many positions at George Brown College and contributed significantly to its establishment and development. He took pride in the staff of GBC and the way student lives were enriched by their guidance and teachings. He retired in 1994 as Senior Vice President. Jim was committed to improving the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and their families. He played a major role in the establishment of group home bylaws, inclusive educational opportunities, and enlightened public understanding and acceptance. He served for many years on the Boards and Committees of Community Living Ontario and Community Living Toronto and was twice President of Community Living Toronto. Jim's life was directed by the writing of Antoine de St. Exupéry: 'To be a man is, precisely, to be responsible. It is to feel shame at the sight of what seems to be unmerited misery. It is to take pride in a victory won by one's comrades. It is to feel, when setting one's stone, that one is contributing to the building of the world'. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2011: The George Brown College School of Hospitality, 300 Adelaide St. E., Toronto. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jim Turner Endowment Fund at George Brown College, or Community Living Toronto or Ontario. Our world has been enhanced by Jim's contributions. It is diminished by his death.
