Orwell realised that Oceanian society would engender feelings of angst and resentment in the people that could be turned against the Party - the purpose of the daily hate is to vent this frustration and turn it to the Party's advantage (by offering the populace Goldstein as a scapegoat to work them into a frenzy, and then finally presenting BB as their protector). It's a kind of catharsis - notice how the screams stop the second BB appears - the swing from hate to an induced adoration.

The 5 minute hate reminds me of so many churches I've attended. The only difference is that the devil character (Goldstein)gets to speak in this church and the Preacher (Big Brother) doesn't speak.

Without a rational philosophy, people are nothing more than low-level monkeys easily led in any direction, with a disastrous outcome.
That's why 1984 should be a wake up call for any thinking person.

Wow what a twisted concept that's not a community it's a prison camp, they brainwashed them to think the opposite but how can they love big brother? shouldn't that be backwards aswell? big brother will save them from what exactly becoming sane thinking? this is messed up.

I was able to purchase a book written by a person who at the time was still living under communist control of Eastern Europe in the mid 1980's and was entitled 1986. Delt with "BIG BROTHER" dies and BIG SISTER takes over---enjoyed the book very much and think Owell would have been pleased with how the author worked his org. chars.

George Orwell's novel has come to life, just not in the ways people would have expected. (It never does).
For example, common internet slang can easily be regarded as the 21st century equivalent of newspeak: LOL, OMFG, GTFO, etc.

oh i get it.... so america is the seat of irony, is it? that's a new one on me! no wait, don't tell me..... you were being ironic? i should have guessed, it -such subtlety! goes well with the highly original gag about limeys with bad teeth (the equivalent to our view of you as a race of fat fucks)
