Part of Dance Umbrella 2009. A leading figure in European dance, Raimund Hoghe makes his festival debut with L'APRÉS-MIDI, continuing his passionate re-appropriation of the greatest classics in the history of dance following on from Sacre - The Rite of Spring (2004) and Swan Lake, 4 Acts (2005). Stéphane Mallarmés poem, LAprès-midi dun faune inspired a symphonic work by Claude Debussy, to which Vaslav Nijinsky gave a choreographic interpretation that became legendary. A century later, Hoghe seizes this masterpiece and gives young French dancer, Emmanuel Eggermont the opportunity to follow in Nijinskys giant footsteps. Floating on the evocative music of Debussy and Mahler, the result is a poetic solo of technical brilliance that is as radiant as it is unique.
