  • Fabulous! Betcha it sounded like this in Gettysburg...

  • Very well could have. Thank you for stopping by, and I hope you have a great day, Brian

  • This is the best version I've ever heard,.....Mark from NYC!

  • I'm glad you enjoyed it! Be sure to check out my other Skillet Lickers videos I have posted. Thanks for watching/commenting, and I hope you have a great day, Brian

  • All politics etc aside (quite aside) - There really IS something wonderfully special .. & also immensely appealing & enjoyable .. about the musical tradition of The South. And .. No one, I think, except men of The South .. good & true, borned & raised .. can do proper justice to this wonderful number .. & especially such awesome home-grown natural talent as Gid, Riley, Clayton & the rest of the boys .. yet another wonderful posting, Brian. Congrats !!

  • Good morning! I think you are right about them being able to make this song come alive. I think too that back then, they had probably heard stories firsthand as children from Confederate veterans and seen the fire in their eyes when they told those stories. I can't help but wonder if they and others like them would think of those old men when they sang this song. Neat stuff. Thank you for watching and I hope you have a great day, Brian

  • I notice on this and other Skillet Lickers recordings there is some crazy female sounding voice in the background. Were there women singing also or is that someone doing an insane falsetto?

  • @qivideo8 It is a falsetto. My lp collection is on the other side of town so I can't think of his name offhand.Falsetto singing was quite popular at that time and many stringbands featured one.

  • I like this version best of all. Not the knock off versions of Dixie. And @stanh4464 no way in hell Riley Puckett could sound like that, good god. If i could see him sing like that a would laugh so damn hard. He looks like he wants to beat the life out of you.

  • @wc4dblues My guess would be somewhere in the mid 20's to early 30's.

  • @qivideo8 That's Riley Puckett the man seated. He sings like that in many of the Skillet Lickers songs.

  • This song was written by a Yankee from Ohio and was enjoyed by Abe Lincoln himself. So, yeah, there is that.

  • from Arkansas and darn proud of it

  • I have no idea how I ended up up here, but am glad I did this is THE KIND, I've heard the name but never heard them play before. What year was this recorded???
