I now know how the bat-summoning glitch works. You need to have him spawn and summon bats, then have him offscreen (you mustn't be too far away, he needs to be still loaded but inactive). So if things go right, he'll sort of call several bats into his waiting line and summon them all at the same time once you have him onscreen again. So this way many bats are loaded at once!
I combined this with the bubble glitch this time as I was messing around. It seems to trigger some new interesting glitch. The game becomes unstable and freaks out when you have Mario on the top of the screen, in a bubble and 15 sprites loaded.
Those barriers with glitchy tiles like in 0:56 are to be found underneath each level. All I know is that it doesn't reset to its untouched state when re-entering the same level, after you altered something in them (like after you destroyed breakable blocks). I spent a long time trying to find a tile that would send me to the ending credits or altered my savegame (which would have produced a glitched + short TAS of the game), but no luck. They mostly only are related to the level layout, and would reset/freeze the game upon touching them. I haven't investigated them thoroughly yet though...
Wow! Thats crazy.

You know what really stumps me? It's the fact that how do you people keep finding these neat glitches?
Oh, and this video deserves 5 stars.
