HMY IOLAIRE. The Final Voyage

The twisted metal and splintered wood fragments are all that remains of the Iolaire apart from a small tiled section of the galley deck and some ammunition shells. This once proud ship went down at the Beasts of Holm on the 1st January 1919 at 1am with the loss of two hundred and five Naval ratings from Lewis and Harris.. They were returning home from the horrors of the first world war only to be lost on their own doorstep with the lights of Stornoway visable a short distance away.

@3NUNS Hi, There is not a lot left to see as the yacht was cut up by the Admirality a few years after this disaster. The engines, guns,screw, etc etc were removed and what you see is the scrap that is left including ammunition shells bullets, boiler, cut prop shaft and shards of the interior of this one time luxury private steam yacht once known as the Amalthea and launched as Iolanthe ! @3NUNS Yes they were drowned, and the wreck lies in 40 ft of water just below the memorial on the shore

These men had survived the horrors of WW1 only to die within a stones throw of their homeland. What a tragedy.
