1990 World Figure Skating Championships (Halifax, Nova Scotia, CANADA), Ice Dance, Ice Dancing

Siblings Isabelle Duchesnay and Paul Duchesnay, Canadian born and representing France earned five 6.0s for their beautiful free dance "Missing" and won this portion of the competition.

I remember watching this at home in 1990 and being moved to tears with the symbolism of the choreography and the melodic and haunting pan pipe music of South America.

The Duchesnays were known for their thematically innovative ice skating routines and it was ground breaking (or rather ice breaking) that ice dancers had integrated a political theme about 'disappearances' the Central and South American juntas had enforced throughout the '70s and early '80s.

The choreography and concept of the performance "Missing" was originally Christopher Dean's work, British Olympic gold medalist in ice dancing and for a short time Isabelle's spouse.

  • @HuzseKirosina

If I understand corectly from google translate...

Luckily, fellow youtuber "tedsler" answered this a few comments back:

Second half of the program at least is by "inti illimani" the track I found is called 'sikuriadas" and comes from the album "Lejania"

  • The first music portion is Dolencias.

  • @jamesfox2002 Thanks!

  • The judges never appreciated their talent..I think they finally obtained second in a major competition... all of us real skating fans much prefer the passion of the Dushenays to the so called cleaner lines...of Torvill and Dean. Those were the days of excellent skating from the Russians ( two pairs) and the Dushenays and the fans loved it..nothing like the insipid routines of today.

  • Dean choreographed their amazing routines for yrs, bringing the Duchesnays to prominence. Torvill and Dean were world champs 4 times & Olympic champs, because with their ground-breaking choreography T&D were streets ahead of the competition technically. The Duchesnays weren't. Their Russian rivals had the edge in basic skating skills. So they only won ONE World Champ. and that in a year when the Russians were under a cloud after a drugs scandal. But they interpreted dance drama with great style

  • Uno de esos programas simplemente majestuosos, inteligentemente diseñados para impactar al público sobre todo, me encantó! simplemente magnífico!

  • there is another CD with that music called "incantation"

  • impressively fast, high-energy throughout

  • @flubberwinkle

    Thank you very much!

  • Emotional tribute. T&D skated to this music and theme this for years. A worthy and heartfelt subject, translated.

  • @memuysexyfosho Yes, I agree totally with your comment. A special and magical skate, something to be remembered for all time. There is nothing like this now in ice dancing, as the new rules, which I do not like, call for other things.
