This is a clip from Beyond Tomorrow documenting the Carnegie Mellon University Cave Crawler. The robot is an experimental test-bed for mapping subterranean mines. It uses laser sensors to build a model of all the surfaces it encounters. Other sensors like radar and sonar will complement its survey capabilites. In the future is will also be used for mine search and rescue operations.

I'd love to build one of those things for recreational use, and send it into abandoned gold rush area mines!
