  • Cool video. Hopeful student of Zen and the Tao here.

  • Thanks. I'll subscribe to your videos.

  • To which of the 4 castes did the two monks get assigned in India. If none to which one do native indian monks usually belong?

  • People from outside the castes (foreigners, Dalits...) transcend them when they become sannyasis, because "renunciants" renounce their caste duties, as well as riches and offspring. The twice-born (brahmanas, kshatriyas) take off their thread and at least symbolically (sometimes physically) strip down to nothing. Sannyasis, sadhus, swamis go beyond the duality of sacred and profane, beyond all caste and other distinctions. That's what Monchanin and Le Saux meant to do.

  • What an interesting video...Your habit seems to be the same saffron shade which Buddhists priests wear. If Buddhists priests came and tried to proselytize to you and your brothers, would you then tailor your robes in a different fashion?

  • Here in Berkeley, I shop at Goodwill Industries for everyday clothes. When in India, I wear saffron. Buddhists don't proselytize, but neither do we. Our constitutions forbid it, and exhort us to welcome people of all persuasions. We have had Buddhist priests as guests in our monasteries in California and Italy. As for Shantivanam, when Hindu monks stay at our ashram, they say, "We feel completely at home here!"

  • I am looking forward to reading your book. Thanks for sharing. I am finding this information illuminating and liberating.

  • Thank you for the video! Beatiful message. There is much truth and beauty in Hinduism, Buddhism and Early Christianity. It is very encouraging to see these truths coming together in your work and that of Fr. Bede.

  • Thank you Father Mateus. It was enchanting just now to hear the chat you posted - looks like it is called Ashram Diary - Introduction. I met you at Esalen in 1988 or so and enjoyed the conversations we had about the interaction of India and Christianity.

  • I knew Buddhists didn't proselytize, and I'm glad to hear that you don't either. Thanks for your enlightened answer.

  • Only a hopeful imperfect self-learning student. It is easy, but extremely hard to let go and realize it can be easy. Don't make any videos right now sir, but enjoy yours, and as I said, I love Morricone's The Mission. It's my channel video.
