even if you were not a verve fan all you would need to do is listen to them live and you would get sucked in

This song its lyrics are so simple and telling. In my view it has become a classic. It is a pleasure to hear again and again.

They paid to play a 5 note sampling from an older 1960s song. There were over 20 original samplings in Bittersweet Symphony and the lyrics were the Verve's as well. So yes, 2-3% of the song was not original. The Rolling Stones manager sued the Verve only after the song became a smash hit when he smelled the money.
The Verve are by far one of the best rock bands ever. They have an original and distinct sound, much better to the pop tart, band boy, and rapper crap we've been hearing.
