1601-ben a 15 éves háború nyomán a császári zsoldosok Basta György vezetésével felégették várost.

The city was first documented in 1332 in the papal registry under the name Novum Forum Siculorum, and as 'Sekulvasarhel' (Székelyvásárhely) in 1349. On the place of its Castle Church, the Dominican's church stood until the Mongol invasion, when it was destroyed. In its place, the Franciscans built a new Gothic church in 1260 , which was completed in 1446. Since 1439 the town was the scene of the session of parliament ( diet) 36 times. In 1405, the King of Hungary Sigismund of Luxembourg granted the city the right to organize fairs. In 1470 King Matthias Corvinus granted the first judicial privilege to the city, and in 1482 declared the city a royal settlement. In 1492, wayvoda István Báthory strengthened its monastery with fortifications, this was a pentagon-shaped outer castle tower. In 1704, the kuruc troops of Pál Kaszás occupied the fortress, which was re-occupied by Lörinc Pekry from the labanc in 1706. On 5 April 1707, Francis II Rákóczi was raised to the chair of princes. In 1861, Marosvásárhely became the seat of Marosszék, in 1876 that of Maros-Torda County. In 1880 the statue of Bem was inaugurated in Roses Square, in downtown area; in 1893 the statue of Kossuth was as well. The statue of Rákóczi was also inaugurated in 1907. All three were demolished after World War I between 1919 in 1923. After Transylvania became part of Romania, all three of them were destroyed between 1919 and 1923. The provincial appearance of the city changed greatly in the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 1913, the Hungarian Art-Nouveau style city hall complex and Cultural Palace was opened, as part of mayor Bernády György's urban renewal. After World War I, together with the rest of Transylvania, Marosvásáshely became part of Romania and was re-named Oşorheiu. From having been an 89% Hungarian-populated city (1910), Romanian population increased throughout the latter half of the 20th century. In March 1990, shortly after the Romanian Revolution of 1989 overthrew the communist regime, the city was the stage of violent confrontations between ethnic Hungarians and ethnic Romanians. The city has a substantial ethnic Hungarian minority, some of whom identify as Székelys. Since 2003 some Székely organizations have been campaigning for the city to become the center of an autonomous region again.

  • NAGYON SZÉP VIDEO! ♫

  • By the way the Stained Glass Art was created by Toroczkai Wigand Ede and Nagy Sandor, both funders of the Diodi Art Colony ( Transylvania ) and later the Godolo Art Colony.

Both names sound very Rumanian, may be they too were Maghiarized

  • For Dragonescu again

Sorry but there were 800,000 Germans in Transylvania by 1920 not 80,000, I just want to correct the number bellow..

  • For Draconescu.

Yes , the Hungarians MAGHIARIZED so many Germans in Transylvania, that by 1920 there were 80000 Germans living in Transylvania and Banat. ( Saxons and SCHWABIANS ).

I wonder what happened to them in 50 years of Rumanian rule ??, because there were only 30000 by the late 1970s.

About the Magharization of Rumanians, by 1920 there were 2.8 million Rumanians in Transylvania, you would think that after 1000 years of Rumanian Maghiarization wouldn't be any left .

  • @draconessoimaru

    Would you stop your NONSENSES.

You have nothing Historical or Cultural in this Beutiful Hungarian / Szxekely City , Marosvasarhely.

What you have, are your Rumanian Churches built after 1920, financed by the Rumanian Goverment.

OHHH , I almost forgot, there is an Avram Iancu statue too.

So far the name says it clearly : NOVUM FORUM SICULORUM or as the Germans said , SZEKLERS NEUMARKT ( I am talking about the Siebenburgen Saxen ).

  • I would have loved to see more photos representing edifices and monuments from both sides since it's mostly a bicultural city. But i understand your desire to accentuate the hungarian element more.

I hope that everybody understands that such cities are the examples of multiculturality and this is what EU it's all about ! I hope that even nationalists will learn some day to leave in peace with their neighbours and than it will be a true union ! We can all be EU nationalists !!!

  • Read this video to see the real truth hiden for you, the most manipulated men in all the world: is called "Transylvania is not hungarian land" and for the moment have 3 parts but 2 will follow after Craciun (Karacsony you stolen our word...:)) and the New Year!

  • @draconessoimaru You are roma-gipsies. Nothing else.

  • @Hungaria56 LOOOOOOOL, is like in the cities, were you make from germans and hebrews...also magyars from 1869 to the God blessed year 1918, when this magyarization was finaly stoped! By the way, today is a great day for us, 1 December 1918, the Great Union, the dream of Michael the Brave, when we have a country and you was Pashalik. Haidipa!

  • @Hungaria56 LOL,i am Romanian and i am FROM HERE,from my land, Romania!
