A president, a peace activist and a women's rights campaigner, all women, were named winners of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize.

The three women from the developing world, Liberia's President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee and Yemeni women's rights activist, Tawakul Karman were named by the Norwegian Nobel Committee at a ceremony in the capital, Oslo, on Friday.

They were honoured for their "non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights to full participation in peace-building work".

Al Jazeera's Barnaby Phillips reports from Monrovia, Liberia.
