Witness Kansas at their best. This song is from their third album "Masque" and was written as one 15 minute long track together with "The Pinnacle". Due to pressure from the record company to come up with more radio friendly songs it was cut in two, with "Mysteries An Mayhem" being the first part.
The lyrics were inspired by a nightmare/vision Kerry Livgren (the blonde haired guitar player) had about a demon-like creature hunting him down to sentence him. Dreams like this had a major inpact not only on his songwriting but his personal life as well. For over a decade he struggled to find spiritual fulfillment until the truth revealed itsself to him on July 25th, 1979.
The band:
-Robby Steinhardt - vocals, violin
-Kerry Livgren - guitar, keys
-Steve Walsh - vocals, keys
-Rich Williams - guitar
-Dave Hope - bass
-Phil Ehart - drums
(all 6 original members)

@denver6147 Agreed 1000%. So sad Robbie is not with the band anymore. He is a fantastic vocalist and violinist and has such an awesome stage presence.

There has never been a line up of Kansas that were not amazing. To even argue about who is better,or which line up is better is just a waste of time..

@MrSpartyhawk I dissagree. David Ragsdale on violin & rhythm guitar brought the band to a whole new level, he is one talented guy.

MrSpartyhawk is right. I love Kansas. My favorite band of all-time, but without Kerry, it's just Not the same. Kerry Rules!

You hit the nail on the head. This was Kansas as it was and never will be again. It really shows Kerry's influence on the band. They've never been the same without him and currently are just a shell of their former greatness. Listen to a song from 2011 compared to this and it just sounds hollow. Thanks for sharing this gem!
