This stack of bricks is not a kiln but a traditional Japanese method for burning selected organics into ash for glaze making. After the plant material is slow burned from the bottom up it is collected, washed, and mixed into slip glazes. Some of the bricks had a lot of pitch on them from burning the Balsam trimmings left over from making Christmas wreaths so I built a special fire to remove it.
