Recently, Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital and Monterey County were honored by the American Heart Association for its STEMI system of care. STEMI is short for S-T Elevation Myocardial Infarction - it's a type of heart attack where there's an interruption of the blood supply to a part of the heart - causing cells to die. It's most commonly caused by blockage of a coronary artery... The result can be severe damage or death - if not treated quickly. Time is of the essence. The 9-1-1 heart STEMI campaign was launched at Salinas Valley Memorial in May 2010. It included the deployment of EKG's in ambulances, allowing paramedics to identify a potential heart attack in the field... And begin life-saving patient care immediately.
