Taira-san is pretty amazing I just met him and got to work with him during my stay at Okinawa, one thing though Taira-san is not THE sensei of the Jundokan hes one of several the "true sensei" of the jundokan is Miyazato Eiichi's son, Miyazato Yoshihiro techinically Taira-san and other high ranking member are only sempais (senior students)

@bigrobnz Exactly! Sport karate; you're trying to score a KO and/or points. Opponent is trying to do the same; you both keep moderate distance to make it harder for them. In a street attack - whether they're trying to injure you, steal your wallet or rape you -they will always be trying to close distance. This does not mean they will inevitably take you to the ground (my experience; more likely to try to pin you against a wall or in corner) but will always be literally "in your face."

the first 30 secs really show what karate is really about- an effective self defence. these days it"s mainly a sport to compete and win medals etc on the wk-end for most people and I don"t know how many "sport karate"people are even aware of the MA side of it.
