In April, NYC Councilman Lew Fidler introduced a Resolution calling upon NYC to provide no "welcoming accomodation" for the UN's celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Durban conference. Many governments, including ours, walked out of Durban, calling it a "hatefest" after swastikas and pictures of Hitler were displayed and copies of the notoriously anti-Semitic "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" were distributed. Barron took to the floor to attack Fidler and the resolution. After Barron walked out, knowing that Fidler would shortly respond, Fidler got to his feet to speak. When he was done, additional Council members signed on to the resolution, making for a total of 41 out of 51 members.
