Love is the four letter word. This song is about a girl breaking his heart. She says let's just be friends. But he still loves her. All he hears is that she wants to end what they have. But he can't just let go. Thus to him all he can think when she says lets be friends is that he still loves her. You do have a point that a four letter word is an expression for a "Curse word" which love to him is clearly a curse.

the simple explanation of this song is "friend is a four letter WORD". in other words it doesn't mean anything to him. I.E. "end is the only part of the word that I heard", meaning he's done with this person. there's no mystery here. simple word play. I understood this back when i was in middleschool however many years ago about 12 years ago
