Title should say 8th Dan. Kendo only goes to the Hachidan.

i don't know about whatever martial art you practice, but in kendo, you take tests for rank up to and including 8-dan. that's the highest (with a pass rate of about 0.5%). 9th and 10th are honorary. i couldn't say the criteria for being awarded 9-dan, but i suspect it has to do with contributing in some way to the world of kendo. also, i've heard that 9-dan is awarded somewhat frequently, but that most people refuse it.
