One of the most beautiful operetta / musical songs coming from Germany is "So stell ich mir die Liebe vor" ("That is how I imagine love") - composed by Friedrich Schröder for "Hochzeitsnacht im Paradies" ("Wedding night in paradise") which premiered at the Metropol theater in late september 1942 with Johannes Heesters as Ulrich Hansen - the male lead, Gretl Schörg as Dodo, Ingeborg von Kusserow and Walter Müller.
The composer Friedrich Schröder (1910-72) initially studied music history and church music... However the crash of 1929 and the subsequent financial crisis wiped out his finances and he became a music copier... He met Peter Kreuder and became his arranger before starting to compose himself. He worked a lot for the movies and wrote "Ich tanze mit dir in den Himmel hinein" - made famous by Lilian Harvey and Willy Fritsch; "Man müsste Klavier spielen können" for Johannes Heesters; "In einer Nacht im Mai" for Marika Rökk with Peter Kreuder; "Weil der D-Zugführer heute Hochzeit mach" and many others...
He was one of the few high profile musicians to be drafted in 1941 (he had always kept his distance to the regime). He was released from the army in 1942 and resumed his activities...
"Hochzeitsnacht im Paradies" was Friedrich Schröder's first operetta - other songs that became popular were : "Ein Glück, dass man sich so verlieben kann"; "Ich spiel' mit dir" and "Was ich dir noch sagen wollte"...
The operetta was filmed twice - once in 1950 with Johannes Heesters and Claude Farell (Monika Burg) and again in 1962 with Peter Alexander and Marika Rökk. A television adaptation was made in 1974 - again with Heesters and the operetta remains on playbills to this day.
After the war Friedrich Schröder succesfully continued his career and composed several other operettas and even an opera.
The name Traute Rose (1904) may not ring any bells today but at one point this soprano was a very popular singer thanks to numerous appearances on the radio and the stage. In addition to that she regularly dubbed the actresses' singing voices. She dubbed "Träume nur" for Maria Andergast in "Das grosse Abenteuer" and "Schliess deine Augen und träume" for Leny Marenbach in "Ehe in Dosen"...
She was a close friend of the naturalist painter Lotte Laserstein - whom she met in 1925 and whose muse she was throughout the 1920s. Laserstein fled to Sweden in 1937 - her mother died in Ravensbrück,her sister went into hiding in Berlin and survived. The friendship between the two ladies lasted for nearly 70 years until Laserstein's death in 1993.... Traute Rose's date of death is unknown...
She delivers - perhaps the word "lives" is more appropriate - beautifully and takes the listener to his own dreamy paradise...
A modern version of "So stell ich mir die Liebe vor" by the singer Geraldine Olivier can be found on YT. It is a prime and sad example of how a beautiful song can be ruined...
The video is another contrasting one. By the time "Hochzeitsnacht im Paradies" premiered in the autumn of 1942 the first big German cities had been attacked by allied bombers as part of the Moral Bombing Strategy. The first cities suffer serious damage were Cologne and Lübeck... This video contains footage of the raid on Lübeck on Palm Sunday 1942 - combined with sequences from several movies of the era...

Merci!

I don't speak a word of German, but I consider this to be among the most beautiful musical shows ever written.
