From the excellent Rustig Toko Lodge, where we were staying, in Kamanjab, northern Namibia we traveled west, on dirt roads, through the Grootberg pass, to Palmwag, and then north to Kwowarib and the Hoanib River. From here the adventure really began, we left the roads behind and entered the dried river bed of the Hoanib and then the Ombende River. For 5 hours we drove along the river bed until we finally found the elusive desert elephants. I had never done anything remotely like this before and would recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure, a love of vast unspoiled open spaces, and a desire to see wildlife in its natural environment outside the game reserve.

Our Guide for the trip, Hindie van Rensburg, is the owner of the Rustig Toko Lodge in Kamanjab. Thanks Hindie for an excellent experience!
