Liverpool bird flies!
Fresh on the cuban heels of the Beatles' success came fellow (and non-fella) Liverpudlians. The Searchers and Gerry & the Pacemakers hit big, but others waxed singles and waned. Jeannie & the Big Guys did a solid take of the Shirelles' "Boys", no doubt reflipping the script on Ringo. Their B-side was this banging Beat number, which has all the catchiness and perfect clang one could want!

The mid-60's was the Jet Age turning into the Space Age. The youth took the promises of a gleaming future to heart and Modernism ruled art, music, fashion, and outlooks. Often these all overlapped. Op Art could be found on Jasper John's paintings, Keith Moon's chest, and in young women's closets. The same way that Op patterns confounded the eye, the youth intended to flip reality inside out and come up with something more. Something brash, futuristic, perplexing, and loud!

  • what painting is the picture at :50 based on?

  • Piet Mondrian, of the De Stijl art group, was a "Punk" of painting with his severe geometry and flat colors. Yves Saint Laurent used the patterns for radical dresses in the '60's.

The White Stripes use the Black-White-Red and the geometry of the De Stijl art group, and named an album after it.

  • My dad was the drummer in Jeannie and the Big Guys and I think he rocks!! They appeared on TV a couple of times (6-5 special or something like that) and even supported The Beatles once!

    Terry Lynch is the best!!

  • Wow, that's great! I sure hope this does him some justice. Lots of people have really enjoyed the music he helped make.

  • I love the sixties. I've always wanted to be a mod-girl even when I was just a little thing in the early early 80's. I used to see the Supremes and clips from the 60's and just wanted to be like them. I still haven't grown out of that

  • Quality is timeless; embrace your inner Mod!

  • This is the coolest song I've come across on you tube in a long time. I'm gonna ask my girlfriend to get a flip hair do and some vinyl boots !

  • A very Beatles-esque sound, just the thing for that swingin' year of '64.

There was an undeniable excitement to that time. It felt like everything was getting modern and new and different, and better.

To see two gals who embody this entire look (and attitude), watch "Blow-Up" for the scene where photographer David Hemming takes the two mod birds back to his studio under the guise of wanting to photograph them. No photos end up being taken...
