The Universe

A compilation of Hubble photo's from NASA. This was made in memory of Carl Sagan and includes some quotes from him. I go through the number of stars and galaxies and show how vast the universe is, trying to make you feel small. I give an approximated calculation on the number of planets with life there could be, taking the chance of life arising as 1 in 1000000000 which i believe is quite conservative. After making you feel small i remind you all of the chance of your existence which leads to your ultimate significance.

The Universe is a brilliant mix of the best of the Hubble images combined with spine tingling and humbling bits of knowledge about the universe.

The size of the universe was taken from 'tdarnell's' video "Hubble Deep Field: The Most Imp. Image Ever Taken (Redux)" in which he states it came from "a paper in Physical Review Letters (2004) which puts the size of the universe at 46.5 billion light years" It may have changed since 2004, if anything has changed I will correct it all in the description.

If anyone has any questions or comments please don't hesitate to ask me anything either in a message or comment. I will try to reply in under 3 days. I'm quite passionate about this subject and so any questions really interests me. Don't Hold back.

nasa.gov "How Big is the Milky Way? Imagine that our entire Solar System were the size of a quarter. The Sun is now a microscopic speck of dust, as are its nine planets, whose orbits are represented by the flat disc of the coin. How far away is the nearest star to our sun? In our model, Proxima Centauri (and any planets that might be around it) would be another quarter, two soccer fields away. This is the typical separation of stars in our part of the galaxy. " - There are about 400 000 000 000 stars in the milky way, imagine how far away the furthest one would be.

My planets with life calculation was as follows

125000000000(galaxies) x 100000000000(stars per galaxy) = 12500000000000000000000(stars)
if 1 in 10 stars had planets(a fair estimate) and the average number of planets per star was 5(another fair estimate) then there would be 6250000000000000000000 planets in the universe.
If we then take the chance of life arising as 1 in 1000000000(which i believe to be very conservative) then there would still be:

6250000000000 planets with life in the universe (a very conservative figure)

I hope you enjoy. All comments, massages, ratings and subscriptions are appreciated.
Thanks

  • Oh ha ha I wasn't suggesting that through man made technology we would create galaxies. I was more saying that by becoming like god we would someday maybe create galaxies :D.

  • @Zella456

Then makes even less sense. The answer is no

  • I don't think we are insignificant. :) Maybe we will create galaxies some day.

  • no, we won't create galaxies.

  • How on earth do you know? :)

  • @Zella456

Because it's impossible and will serve no use

  • the universe is insignificant to us as to mean whatever its size is its irelivent to our situation. which means we are not the irelivent ones. the universe was created for us and our being.we will never hold the knowledge of the unseen.so to this all i can say is that allah constructs what he wills and says to it be and it is! he does whatever he wills and he is the ruler of all the worlds.as it states in the quran in every chapter.this means there are more than just one world but wel never know

  • Completely astonished! allow me to congratulate you for this masterpiece... at least the messages that resonate from the video are amazing... especialy the ending text... very good job! if I was able, I would have rated this 10/5 !!

  • @m0osey This is awesome music for the video, great job and thank you!

  • @WallCarBoatHead not in your lifetime

  • there is way more life out there and they are way way way way smarter than us.. millions of years of technology ahead of us

  • @MetalKladCicada91 don't worry, it won't be necessary to send your dead body into space...your atoms and the consciousness lying within will automatically be returned to the universe

  • well done, while it's hard to comprehend such huge numbers it's also hard to comprehend the incredible ignorance of most of the people on this planet who aren't even capable of contemplating their own existence...namaste

  • This made me want to jump in a rocketship and explore the other planets of life
