In November 2011, founder and CEO of Great Works Internet (GWI) Fletcher Kittredge spoke to a large group of University of Maine at Farmington undergraduates about how a liberal arts education prepares students for a variety of successful careers, even in fields they may not have considered. He spoke from experience, having himself graduated from a liberal arts college with a major in English. During the presentation, UMF students in the audience had the opportunity to participate in a lively Q & A. Founded in 1994 and headquartered in Biddeford, ME, GWI is a leader in northern New England's telecommunication industry, offering telephone and Internet solutions for residential and business customers. It has been recognized as one of the country's 500 fastest growing companies by Inc. Magazine.
